How do I find a therapist or life coach?

We know life is constantly changing; as the saying goes, the only constant is change. During the challenges of change, we frequently experience feeling lost, despair, depression, anxiety, stress, and fear.

When we feel negative, we are sufferings. Fortunately, there are experts who can help us, guide us, or even treat us. If you are suffering, please consider hiring a therapist or a coach to help you navigate through the challenges.

Here is a short comparison of a therapist and a coach.

Ideally, a therapist is a mental and emotional specialist. They can work with you in any mental or emotional difficulty. Additionally, a therapist can diagnose mental illness and offer a prognosis and treatment for that illness. Therapists can also work with past traumas with analysis and management of the results of those traumas. Generally, therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists are more qualified for mental and emotional difficulties. Lastly, therapists can do coaching.

Coaches are ethically, and sometimes, legally, restricted to present moment and future planning issues. Coaching is working with your current mindset and devising plans to navigate future situations. Coaches are not therapists. They can not analyze past traumas or diagnose current mental dynamics. Thus, if you desire to heal from past tragedies, you need a therapist, not a coach.

If you find yourself suffering from past traumas, please, seek a therapist.

If you find yourself wanting to plan how you navigate future situations, then a coach or a therapist is a positive move. No matter what situation you’re in, please try not to be afraid to seek out professional help. Psychologists and counselors are people trained to help you safely work through your overwhelming emotions. Coaches can help you see possibilities and opportunities when your mind feels stuck. Both coaches and therapists are tremendous assets to have on your side in dark periods.

At one point in my midlife crisis, I experienced 14 months of clinical depression before seeking help. I could not fix the despair I felt myself. My therapists were fantastic people that helped me start walking out of that dark place safely and healthily.

The Mystics I draw from so much in my coaching, my books, and this website taught me to use my thoughts and emotions (especially the depression I felt) to find myself. The therapists taught me how to deal with the depression to function in my daily life.  I needed both schools of help to arrive at this place of Joy, Peace, and Contentment, where I am now.

Here’s how to pick a therapist or coach.

 
  • Find several therapists or coaches in your area via your health insurance, the Internet, or the phone book.

  • Interview at least three or more of them to find one with whom you feel comfortable. This step is significant! You will do better if you feel safe with your guide.

  • Choose your guide based on your comfort level.  The Universe/God/your sub-conscience will make sure you get the right counselor for you eventually.
    • Ask them about their philosophy and methods. Make sure you feel comfortable with their style, belief system, and attitude.

  • If you grow uncomfortable with the one you chose, move on to another one.  A professional guide’s purpose is to help you.  Choose the right one for you and change guides when you’re ready to grow.
